Hounds bounce back: Early bugaboos give way to big scores

Posted: Friday, Mar 17th, 2017

ATASCADERO — After a “sloppy” start in the first game of the season, the Atascadero High School varsity baseball team put together a comeback against the Everett Alvarez Eagles during game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at AHS.

With a new scoreboard shining beyond the outfield, looking over a manicured field on a bright sunny day for baseball.

The Eagles took advantage of the weather and field conditions, jumping out to a 3-0 lead through three innings.

In the bottom of the second inning, Atascadero’s first baseman and senior Zach Garcia got on base and made it to third and second base, respectively, looking for an opportunity to come home and put Atascadero on the board.

Everett Alvarez found outs where it needed them, and retired Atascadero leaving two on base.

Making their way into the bottom of the fourth inning, Atascadero made a move. Churning out four runs, the Greyhounds began taking over the day, on a run that spilt over into the second game of the doubleheader.

A shaken Eagles team loaded the bases in the fourth inning, and continued to walk batters to send the tying score across home plate.

With two balls, one strike, two outs, and loaded bases, AHS junior Nathan Mitchell hit a hard grounder to the shortstop, who gathered himself before throwing to wide left to first base, allowing Mitchell to reach first with the Eagles’ first baseman losing his foot from the bag to make the catch.

The error allowed a score, as so many errors do, and Atascadero took the lead and did not look back.

The Greyhounds scored 12 runs in a row to win both games of the doubleheader.

The final score of game one was 7-3, and the final of game two was 5-0.

Atascadero and Templeton meet today at 11 a.m. at Vineyard Athletic Park.
