APD: Burglary arrest made with the use of modern security system and K-9 team

ATASCADERO — Atascadero police officers responded on Saturday, June 29, to a call of a burglary in progress at approximately 11:50 p.m. at Felix’s Barbershop, 8420 El Camino Real, Atascadero. 

According to the Atascadero Police Department just prior to the officer’s arrival, the individual ran from the scene and eluded officers for a short period of time. APD K-9 Luke quickly tracked down the suspect, who was hiding under a truck in a nearby industrial complex. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. 

He was identified as Phong Thanh Tran, 49, of Paso Robles, and was booked into the county jail on suspicion of burglary, felony vandalism for over $400, delaying or obstructing an officer, possession of burglary tools and violation of probation.

The owner of the barbershop recently had a Ring security system installed. He was alerted by the system and video recorded the suspect, Tran, who was actually someone known to and recognized by the owner. 

During the burglary, the owner monitored the inside of his business and provided updates to APD officers, while they were en route. Officers were also able to view the Ring video and positively identify Tran as the suspect. 

No one was hurt in this incident, Tran was arrested and the stolen property was recovered. He was booked into the county jail on June 30 and bail was set at $50,000.

In this instance, officers were aided by the security system and video footage. Whenever feasible for business owners and residents, similar security installations are recommended to assist local police officers.
