ATASCADERO — Terrie Banish is usually found backstage, creating and managing the production side of marketing and ad events as the Deputy City Manager — Outreach, Promotions and Events for the City of Atascadero. This year, Terrie steps front and center as a Community Star dancer for Friends of the Atascadero Library (FOAL).
As a youngster, Terrie had ballet and tap lessons but dance has not been part of her adult life. She shares that she feels “very honored” to be chosen as a Community Star, a role that she has thought about for several years.
Terrie says, “I have always enjoyed the library and the resources available that have personally helped me growing up from my childhood, through my college years and now through my adult years as I raise a family of my own. The library is a major educational resource that everyone in the community can grow and benefit from.”
Terrie has had a successful marketing career, winning awards for top sales at Six Flags Magic Mountain, where she worked for 10 years, and similar recognition during her 15 years with the Advertising Department of the San Luis Obispo Tribune.
Terrie has worked on advertising campaigns with many local businesses and volunteered extensively with groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Friends of the Atascadero Lake, among others. Moving further afield, she is associated with Friends of Hearst Castle and has worked with the Paso Robles Main Street Association.
In her professional role with the city, Terrie has played a major role in many of the City’s signature events: the Central Coast Cider Festival, Z-Day California Car Show, Central Coast Craft Beer Festival, Tent City Marathon, Cruisin Weekend’s Hot El Camino Cruise Nite, Dancing in the Streets, Winter Wonderland, Tamale Festival and Brew at the Zoo.
It is no wonder that Atascadero’s Tourism Board received the Tourism Champion of the Year award for 2017 from the county’s Tourism Marketing District.
In her leisure time (you wouldn’t think she had any, would you?), Terrie likes hiking, gardening, beach activities and wine tasting. Speaking of which, Terrie and her husband own and operate a boutique winery, Black Hand Cellars. Their grapes are grown on the west side of San Miguel and they have a small tasting room in Cambria.
Terrie’s partner, the talented dancer and choreographer Chris Harmon, has been dancing and teaching dance for years. He rose to prominence in the DWOS community when he choreographed the dance for the 2014 Champion, Rolfe Nelson. He followed up in 2015 with a second Champion, Vicky Morse. He has been partnering Community Stars ever since and has also been featured in Frank Sanchez’ production numbers. This year he is partnering two Community Star dancers, a much-appreciated gift of his time and energy. When he is not dancing, Chris teaches high school economics in Santa Maria.
