Atascadero loses heartbreaker

Lohayza’s seventh inning 2-run homer not enough

TORRANCE— The Atascadero Greyhounds fought until the very end against West Torrance on Tuesday afternoon but came up just short. Down to just their final out, trailing 2-3 in the top of the seventh, Atascadero’s leadoff and most consistent hitter all year, Claire Lohayza stepped into the box. Rather than letting the pressure build with each passing pitch, she opted to crush the first one she saw over the fence, giving Atascadero a 4-3 lead and more importantly giving the Hounds three more outs to play.

With the huge shift in momentum and ace Bailey Doherty on the mound, it seemed that the Hounds would be heading to CIF title game after just three more outs. Doherty walked the first batter on four pitches before recording back to back outs via a pop-up and a strikeout. However, after issuing one more walk, West Torrance’s clean up hitter ended the game with a walk-off 3-run homer to left field, her only hit of the day. Atascadero’s season comes to an end in the semifinals.
