Atascadero man killed in single-vehicle accident Sunday

CRESTON — A single-vehicle accident east of Atascadero killed one man Sunday and left another with major injuries.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 26-year-old Cory Rodriguez, of Atascadero, was driving a 2016 Subaru southbound on Highway 41 south of Cripple Creek Road when the vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons, crashed through a barbed-wire fence into a livestock pasture before colliding with a tree.

Part of the tree protruded into the right side of the vehicle, leaving passenger, 21-year-old Elijah Susen, of Santa Margarita, with major injuries.

Susen was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo while Rodriguez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Police have not ruled out drugs and/or alcohol as a factor in the accident.
