Atascadero name spikes after wedding

ATASCADERO — Atascadero’s best and worst kept secret saw the town’s name popping up in international tabloids and spiking in Google search alerts Wednesday, Aug. 29 as news broke that singer-songwriter Neil Young and actress Daryl Hannah held a “secret wedding” involving a reception in the City the weekend before.

No locals involved in events nor any of the downtown merchants who’ve enjoyed the couple’s visits on occasion went blabbing to the papers though.

As British entertainment section writers called offices in Atascadero, management staff at the hotel which Young is reputed to stay at declined to comment to the press, noting that it wasn’t unusual to sell out rooms on a weekend.

The UK’s Mirror followed by the Guardian took their confirmation of the celebrity wedding instead from social media scrutinizing a message on Hannah’s Instagram referencing love, then statements made by guitarist Mark Miller congratulating the pair on Facebook.
While the same tabloids chronicle a history of the pair’s relationship for those curious, in downtown Atascadero on Wednesday the prevailing “man on the street” opinion was that anyone who needed to know more about the weekend’s “shindig” already did.

Alternately some were happy to have off-the-record conversations about the nature of respectful fandom and their hopes that the community is allowed to keep it’s small town character as the region grows.

Anyone interested in the artists’ latest work can find the recently released two and a half hour series finale of the science fiction drama “Sens8,” featuring Hannah, on the Netflix platform.

In 2017, Young announced that he would release his digital archive of Hi-Fi audio to stream for free online through June 30. There is now a subscription for the site, which allows access to the last 50 years of his music.
