ATASCADERO — If one is bored with any one of the at least 15 styles of yoga already out there a new one has come on board recently and is now available in a small yoga studio just off Camino Real in Atascadero — Aerial Yoga. Aerial Yoga is exactly what it sounds like, yoga in the air, or at least off the ground.
“I started in the beginning class with Alyssa for a year then moved on to intermediate with Kellee,” said local resident and two year student Jennifer Love. “It’s fun. I think it’s more fun and challenging for me personally than traditional yoga.”
The Grateful Spirit Yoga studio, owned by Alyssa Slater, opened in 2014 and is the first yoga studio in San Luis Obispo County to offer this new style that takes traditional Asana practice to a new level with the help of a silk hammock suspended from the ceiling. The hammock is used like a prop to assist students into their postures and in many cases allow students to get into postures they may not be able to achieve without it.
Intermediate instructor Kellee Rasor has been teaching aerial yoga for three years and comes by it naturally.
“I used to be a horse vaulter in gymnastics, so I like being upside down,” she said.
But if being upside down isn’t your thing the studio still offers an array of the basics like restorative, yin, vinyasa flow and prenatal. One may be tempted though after seeing an entire class swaying peacefully, enjoying their well earned “shivasana,” perfectly cocooned in their purple and turquoise silk hammocks. That experience alone may be worth giving it a try.
