Bearcats tie up the Hounds

PASO ROBLES — The final installment of Paso versus Atascadero came this week when the wrestling teams from both schools finally met. With all other sports having already played, the Bearcats lead the winter series 5-1.

It was senior night in Paso Robles and the Bearcats recognized those wrestling in the final home match. Paso beat the Hounds soundly on Wednesday night, winning the dual match 55-12. The lower weight classes for the Bearcats really showed their dominance early in the evening and the heavier weight classes continued the trend.

The Bearcats dominated the night and wrestled with great confidence.

“We were just keeping our composure,” Daede Murphy said. “Doing what our coaches told us to do. Not try anything dumb or risky, but just doing what we work on in the room and it really helped us.”

According to Bearcat wrestlers, the team elected to have everyone wrestle up a weight class on Wednesday.

“It was tough, but I think a lot of us did pretty good,” Murphy said.

One hundred and twenty-four-pound wrestler Dylan Maduena and 174-pound wrestler Hunter Deverick have been two of the top competitors for the Bearcats this season. On Jan. 12 and 13, the Bearcats wrestling team traveled to Santa Ynez for the Santa Ynez varsity tournament that hosted a total of 32 teams.

The Bearcats placed sixth as a team while Deverick finished second in 174-pound. Maduena (121), Michael Dominguez (142), and Julian Madrigal (154) each finished in third and Porter Tanner (128) and Kyler Miller (162) each finished in fourth.

Last weekend the Bearcats participated in the Sam Boyd “CIT” Invitational at Morro Bay High School and were again led by Maduena (124) who finished seventh and Deverick (174) who finished eighth out of around 100 schools.

The Bearcats has four league wins this season defeating San Luis Obispo 54-0, St. Joseph 69-12, Arroyo Grande 34-33, and Atascadero 51-22. Paso will compete again on Tuesday when they travel to Righetti High School for a dual meet and the Hounds will host St. Joseph at 7 p.m.
