Breytenbach sisters compete in CIF Regionals

CARPINTERIA— By winning the PAC 8 Girls Tennis Doubles Championship in October, Nicoline and Annaline Breytenbach qualified for the 2017 Girls Individual Tennis Regionals. The two Greyhounds were joined by two singles players and a double team from Arroyo Grande as the only players representing the Central Coast.

The sisters played as singles all season for the Greyhounds but decided to play doubles in the PAC 8 tournament. As a senior, Nicoline had already played in the Regional tournament by herself but wanted to go back just one last time. With Arroyo Grande having such a strong team and the girls knowing the best players from around the league, this year the sisters decided to play together.

In the PAC 8 final the girls came up against the familiar opponent in one of the Dunkle girls from AG. The Breytenbachs had never defeated either of the Dunkles in competition before the finals, but in what they thought might be there last tennis match of the season the sisters defeated the Eagle pair 6-4, 6-4 to win and advance to Regionals.

The regional tournament took place this past Monday in Carpinteria. A convoy of family, friends, and coaches made the trip to support the girls. In the first round, the two faced a doubles team from Valley Christian High School and won easily 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, they faced a pair from Cate High School and again won handily 6-3, 7-5.

The girls’ run ended in the third round when they came up against a team from Marlborough High School. The Greyhounds fell 0-6, 3-6 ending their tennis season.
