It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of Catherine “Kay” Pauline McEwan, 94, our devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a 57 year resident of Camarillo and passed away peacefully in her own home early morning October 18 in the arms of her daughter, Karen. She transcended to Heaven when she was finally ready to be with the Lord for eternity and be reunited with her beloved husband of 49 years, John Raymond “Skip” McEwan, who passed away in 1989.
She was born the first of 11 children to Nicholas and Theresa Keller on December 3, 1922 in Bad Axe, Michigan. She married her high school sweetheart, John “Ray” and soon became an Air Force wife. They lived in many places, finally settling in Camarillo so that her husband could help with his family’s business in Oxnard.
Kay was a homemaker most of her life. When her children were older, she went to work for Von’s. After retiring from Von’s, her love and knowledge of fine jewelry brought an offer to work at a jewelry store and she happily accepted. Her warm heart and unfailing kindness was always felt by family and friends. She was a beautiful woman inside and out who always exuded graciousness and the epitome of elegance.
Kay was an extremely talented woman with many interests. She was an accomplished oil painter, avid gardener/landscaper, interior decorator/designer, seamstress, ceramic doll maker, bowler and golfer. In earlier years, she was past President of the Camarillo Woman’s Club, and belonged to many bridge and pinochle card groups and bowling league teams.
Kay and Ray “Skip” were members of Saticoy Country Club. They spent many months throughout the years at their Palm Springs’ summer home golfing and also travelling to England, Ireland and Scotland to golf with family. They enjoyed their many cruise trips, RV’ing with family, friends and various RV groups traveling to many places together. Their final RV/cruise trip was to Alaska.
Her three surviving siblings all reside in Michigan, August Keller (Barbara), Elsie Waterman (Joe) and Dorothy Sayyae (Bill) . Kay is survived by her children, Kathleen “Kathi” McEwan of Paso Robles, Karen Bratton (Richard) of Camarillo, and Joseph “Joe” McEwan (Francine) of Sparks, Nv. She has 4 grandchildren, Joshua “Josh”, Jared and Justin Bratton and Joseph “Joe Jr” McEwan (Magee) and 3 great grandchildren, Nevaeh McEwan, Jennifer Casey, and Jade Bratton. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and 8 siblings. She was adored and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalene Church at the corner of Las Posas Road and Crestview Avenue, Camarillo at 10:00 am on October 28, 2017. Burial will take place at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura immediately following the Mass and a Celebration of Life lunch will be held at Pepper Farms clubhouse, 2281 Calle Bellota, Camarillo after the interment at about 1:00 pm.
Kay will finally be reunited with Ray at Ivy Lawn Cemetery to complete the journey that they began 77 years ago. Now they are truly “together forever” just as it was written 28 years ago on their headstone while he was waiting for her to join him.
Arrangements are under the direction of Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, (805)482-1166.
