CHP: Two from Atascadero injured in Cuesta Grade collision

CUESTA GRADE — Two people from Atascadero headed southbound in an SUV on Highway 101 collided with a tractor-trailer on Wednesday, Feb. 20, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver of SUV suffered major injuries and two of the three lanes were closed for two hours.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:02 p.m., when Shannon Schmidt, 44, of Atascadero, was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon southbound on Highway 101 just south of TV Tower Road in the number two lane at an unknown speed, CHP reported.
Schmidt moved to the number three lane to pass a slower vehicle and collided with the rear of a 2001 Kenworth tractor-trailer combination, CHP reported. The big rig was being driven by Eriberto Ramirez Barba, 23, of Santa Maria, in the number three lane and he was going 30-35 mph.
The impact caused the GMC Yukon to be wedged under the trailer, CHP reported. The front right passenger, Kyle Schmidt, 9, was able to exit the GMC and suffered moderate injuries.
Shannon Schmidt was extricated from the GMC by Cal Fire San Luis Obispo and San Luis Obispo Fire. Shannon Schmidt suffered major injuries according to CHP.
Shannon and Kyle Schmidt were transported to area hospitals.
Barba was not injured.
