Congregation Ohr Tzafon to host MLK Jr. celebration Jan. 20

ATASCADERO — Congregation Ohr Tzafon will be hosting a special celebration on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the lessons he still teaches today about being courageous in continuing the fight for equality and civil rights for all in America. The presentation will also highlight the remarkable friendship between Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration will take place on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Congregation Ohr Tzafon, 2605 Traffic Way, Atascadero.

The community is invited to this free interfaith, intergenerational celebration: “The Connection Between Us: Living the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The program will feature local blues musicians — vocalist, Valerie Johnson, and guitarist, “Al B Blue,” — along with a panel presentation that includes Stephen Vines, President SLO County NAACP; Dr. Consuelo Meux, Executive Director, SPOKES; Fil Yeskel, COT Member and co-owner of Bru Coffeehouse; and Lauren Bandari, Executive Director, JCC Federation of SLO. A slideshow of local folk photographer, Joe Schwartz, will be shown. His work is on permanent exhibit at the African-American Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. A light lunch will be available for a suggested donation of $10.

This celebration is sponsored by Congregation Ohr Tzafon, JCC Federation of SLO, SLO County NAACP, SPOKES and Bru Coffeehouse. For more information, call 805-466-0329.
