Deputy assaulted by inmate in County Jail

SAN LUIS OBISPO – An inmate at San Luis Obispo County Jail assaulted a correctional deputy Tuesday. The 26-year-old correctional deputy was moving inmates from one section of the jail to another around 12:30 p.m. when one of the inmates charged the deputy and began punching the him multiple times in the head and face.

The Deputy was able to subdue the inmate, 27-year-old Joseph Allen Baker, of Nipomo. Other deputies arrived to assist and the deputy who was transported to a local hospital via ambulance. The deputy sustained injuries including a broken nose and an orbital fracture to his eye socket. The deputy is recovering at the hospital and the inmate, Baker has been re-arrested and is facing a new charge of assault on a peace officer.

Baker was originally brought to the county jail after being arrested by Paso Robles police on Feb. 25 for violating his parole and for obstruction of justice and resisting an officer. His original bail was set at $2,000.
