Donald Ray Cargill

Donald Ray Cargill, 86, was born in April 1933 to William Cargill and Geneva Knight in Tulare, Calif. and passed away June 9, 2019, in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

Don grew up around Visalia and Arcata, Calif. He graduated high school in 1951 and married his first wife Helen to which he had three children. He served eight years in the United States Air Force just after the Korean War. After his service in the Air Force, he went to work for Xerox Corporation and moved to Atascadero, Calif. where his children were raised. He later went into business for himself and opened Cargill Copier Systems which sold and serviced copiers throughout San Luis Obispo County.

In 1999, he met Marilyn Brahatcek whom he later married. After retirement, he enjoyed his daily coffee group at Starbucks with great friends and he loved bowling in Pismo Beach and Santa Maria. Two years ago, he found his church home at Harvest Church in Arroyo Grande and was baptized.

Don had the opportunity of a lifetime last year and went to Washington D.C on the Honor Flight.  He was so thrilled with such an honor. It was there that he was given a special lady as his guardian, June Kester, his “June Bug” and a special friendship was there until the end of his life.

Don is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Mike Cargill of Lake Isabella, daughter Debi Brouillette of Fernley, Nev., daughter Lori Bagby of Atascadero, stepdaughter Robyn Garcia, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will all miss him very much. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson.

His family would encourage the people whose lives he touched to buy a friend a flower, fill out an organ donation card or do a good deed for a stranger. Donations could also be made in Don’s memory to Lighthouse Atascadero (a program of awareness, prevention, and intervention for youth) P O Box 3120, Atascadero, CA 93422, which was dear to his heart because of his loss of a grandson to addiction or a donation to Honor Flight Central Coast, P O Box 1750, Paso Robles, CA 93447.
