Eagles blast into CIF semifinals

Backer and Murphee hit back to back home runs

LOS ANGELES — The Templeton Eagles are heading to the CIF Southern Section Division 5 semifinals after defeating Harvard-Westlake 6-1 this afternoon. The game started with absolute fireworks. Bella Backer batted in the leadoff position for the Eagles and after getting up 3-0 in the count she blasted the first of her two home runs into left field (Backer hit a second home run, this time to right field, in the third inning). The next batter up was Katie Murphee, and after fouling off a couple pitches she cranked her own home run to left field giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the blink of an eye.

Two runs are more than Ashley Daugherty would need as she threw a complete game, scattering four hits and giving up an earned run while striking out eight. The Eagles have now advanced to the semifinal and are one game away from playing for a CIF championship in Division 5. Templeton will play the winner of El Segundo and John W. North on Tuesday.
