ATASCADERO — The Templeton Eagles kicked off the annual Atascadero Men’s Christmas Basketball Tournament this Wednesday when they played the Arroyo Grande Eagles in the tournament’s first match. Templeton played two games on Wednesday, one on Thursday and potentially more on Friday.
The Eagles entered the tournament with a 3-7 record and will have this final tournament to tweak their lineup and establish their chemistry before starting league games in January. Templeton is one of the small if not the smallest school in the tournament and struggled with the size and depth of Arroyo Grande in their first game.
Templeton played tough and kept the game close in the first quarter only trailing 14-20 after the first buzzer. In the second quarter, Arroyo Grande found their stoke and began shooting lights out from behind the three-point line.
In an attempt to keep the game close Max Jensen began shooting threes and finished with 13 points to lead the Eagles. Dennis Isabell also added 11 points.
“I do shoot a lot from the outside, but today it was a little extra,” Jensen said. “Because the bigs they had came into the middle and I didn’t think that the drive was going to be strong so I just kind of put the scoring on my back from the outside.”
Templeton was not able to match the offensive output from Arroyo Grande and they began to pull away in the second half. Arroyo Grande won the game 82-35.

In their second game of the tournament, Templeton played a much tighter game with Montclair High School. At half the Eagles were leading the Cavaliers 39-35 on the back of Jordan Stowers’ 15 first-half points. The Eagles as a team shot the deep ball very well in this game and Stowers made three threes in the first half and Jensen added two.
The Cavaliers were able to tighten their defense down the stretch, forcing the Eagles to have their worst offensive quarter in the fourth, only scoring 11 points. Templeton dropped the game 75-66.
“It definitely prepares us for
Templeton played Atascadero in their final game of the Christmas tournament this afternoon and lost 45-63. Jensen and Stowers led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points and 15 points respectively. Atascadero's big man Kyler Warren scored 35 for the Hounds and was too much for the Eagle bigs to handle.
