Eleanor Marie Shannon

Eleanor Marie Shannon, 85, of Atascadero, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 17, 2018 after a nine year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Eleanor was born to Egidio and Sylvia Papa on Nov. 8, 1932 in Templeton.

She was raised in Templeton where she attended grammar school and high school. She married James K. Shannon Jr. of Templeton in 1963, which started a blended family that grew from there after her prior marriage to Howard Brown of Templeton as well.

Eleanor was a dedicated wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was affectionately known as “Nana” to all of her grandkids. They loved to stay the night or spend time with Nana. Her greatest joys were being with her family, especially all the grandkids, cooking, and a love of doing laundry for whoever needed it.

She enjoyed making homemade ravioli, gnocchi, and noodles with her children, grandchildren and friends that often ended up in a flour fight. Those traditions and crafts are still going strong today through the next two generations. Thank you for those gifts mom/Nana.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose at the Atascadero Moose Lodge where she served with devotion as a board member and Senior Regent. Eleanor organized and held many community fundraisers, Friday Night Fish Fries and Senior Breakfast with her husband Jim at her side. Eleanor never turned down a chance to help those in need. Whether it be for family, friends, or lodge members, she always made herself available to help. Her motto in life was “A labor of love was not work, but an opportunity to give of yourself to help those who needed it”.

Mom, we thank you for the strength and strong will that you instilled in each of us. We’ll always remember your correcting, but loving ways. We thank you for the strong work ethic and perseverance through the various struggles we faced at times as a family. We’ll miss the jokes and colorful rhymes that rolled off your lips, your dancing, quick wit and comebacks. But most of all, we miss you always being there in our time of need. Thank you mom. We love you.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Shannon Jr., sisters: Francis Papa, Gilda Nielson, brothers: Paul Papa and Phillip Papa. Sons: Robert Brown, David Brown, great grandson, Michael Brown III. Survived by sons: Butch Brown, Michael Brown, Jim Shannon III of Atascadero, daughters: Judy Wolf (Glen) of Mountain Home, Idaho, Janie Roeder (Rick) of Bakersfield, Myra Cook of Costa Mesa. Sisters: Gloria Blackwell of Denton , Texas, Angie Hamby of Templeton, eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
