ATASCADERO — Firefighters battled a vegetation fire Thursday afternoon along the Salinas riverbed near Tampico Road.
Atascadero Fire Department responded to the fire shortly after 4 p.m. It was first reported as a half-acre fire, burning at a slow rate with the potential to burn 15 acres. No structures were threatened, but police had evacuated a residence in the 4000 block of Tampico.
Fire resources were staging at Tampico and Gabarda roads.
At approximately, 4:30 p.m the fire reportedly jumped to the Rocky Canyon Road side of the Salinas River.
Air attack and more resources were called in at 4:40 p.m.
UPDATE: At 5:15 p.m. crews on the east side of the riverbed were mopping up, while firefighters on the west side were battling spot fires. San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office issued an alert informing residents in the area that they need to be ready to evacuate if necessary.
