ATASCADERO — Five people were rescued Wednesday afternoon from an island in the Salinas River south of the Highway 41 bridge in Atascadero, the Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services reported.

At approximately 4:31 p.m on Wednesday, March 6, the first arriving Atascadero fire engine found five people trapped on an island in the middle of the Salinas River adjacent to 6900 Sycamore Road.

All five asked to be brought to shore. Technical rescue team members used swift-water rescued equipment, waded through the water and brought the people to shore.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter was brought in to assist but was not needed to hoist any victims.

Recent rains made the river rise trapping the people on the island and also hampered rescue efforts.

The people also had five dogs and a cat that were also rescued. No injuries were reported.

It took approximately 45 minutes for the team to complete the rescue. Two engines, two rescues, a helicopter, two chief officers, a fire marshal, an ambulance and two police lieutenants were dispatched to the rescue.
