Gary Allen Croft, 65, died July 23, 2019, at Trinity Hospital of pneumonia and the effects of a long struggle with cancer. Gary was a longtime resident of Hyampom, Calif. and, for the past year, Hayfork, Calif.
He was born in Atascadero, Calif., on Aug. 18, 1953, to Armand Croft Sr. and Margaret Stephenson Croft, the fourth of five children and the third of four boys. He attended Atascadero public schools, and graduated with the class of 1971 at Atascadero High School. He attended Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo before entering the Navy as a Seabee in 1973. He served in Rota, Spain; Gulfport, Miss.; and Ethiopia.
After leaving the service in 1975, he worked as a carpenter in Atascadero and in 1980, he moved to Hyampom, Calif., where he was a carpenter and cabinet maker.
Gary was admired as a meticulous craftsman and many in Hyampom and Atascadero have his furniture, cabinets, and buildings as perpetual memorials. Beyond his day-to-day work, Gary was one of the first to respond to community projects and disasters. He was not only a good friend to many but will be remembered as having a sharp wit, a grand sense of humor, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the music of the seventies and eighties.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Judy (Mars) Croft, his siblings, and numerous family members and friends.
A memorial was held in Hyampom, Calif., Sunday, Aug. 18, Gary’s birthday.
