Gearing up for Coats for Kids | Around About North County

It doesn’t seem possible that we are talking “Christmas” when we haven’t had Halloween or Thanksgiving yet! However, some of our projects require early preparations to be successful in December. One such project is Coats for Kids. Our team has been mentioning the distribution all year on “social media,” and I’ve mentioned it here in my column, but now we start our big push to get the word out, so here we go.
We need new and gently used coats, jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts for children and adults for the Christmas distributions in Atascadero and Paso Robles. In Paso we partner with Toy Bank of Greater Paso Robles, Toys for Tots, and Salvation Army, who distribute toys and vouchers for food. In Atascadero we partner with Atascadero Loaves and Fishes, Kiwanis, Toys for Tots, and Salvation Army.
Families who have registered are eligible for the distributions. The Paso Robles distribution covers areas north of Templeton and outlying communities. In Atascadero we cover Templeton, Santa Margarita and outlying communities. I will post the dates for registrations in Paso Robles and Atascadero here in this column. You can also check with Loaves and Fishes in Paso Robles and Atascadero in late November or early December.
The Paso Robles distribution will take place at the Paso Robles Event Center in the Frontier Building and the Atascadero distribution will be at the National Guard Armory.
Set-up dates for Atascadero are Dec. 10 and 11, with distribution on the Dec. 12. Set-up will take place on Dec. 13 and 14 in Paso Robles, with distribution on Dec. 15. To volunteer on any of those dates, call Brenda May at 805-466-8610.
As I stated above, we need new or gently used coats, jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts for children and adults. New items should be for children because that’s the biggest gap. Gently used items can be dropped off at any North County cleaners and they will clean them at no charge. We will pick them up. Just be sure to tell the cleaners that they are for “Coats for Kids.”

Don’t forget Zoo Boo at the Charles Paddock Zoo on Oct. 27, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. take the family and join in the fun. There will be carnival games, Halloween activities, a haunted house, and trick or treats! Wear your best costume and be prepared to enjoy a not-too-scary night at the Zoo.
There will be tons of Halloween fun for all ages at this “spooktackular” evening at the Zoo. You might just meet a witch or two, or maybe a friendly ghost! For more information, contact Terrie Banish at 805-470-3490. Tickets are $10 (Regular Admission), $9 (Zoo Members), and children ages 2 years old and younger are free.
