Grace Lorraine Manning, known as Lorraine, was born Nov. 18, 1921, to Peter and Mary Grace Chamberlain in Richmond, Calif. She had three siblings, Bon, Don, and Bill. The family moved to Atascadero in 1939 following the death of her father.
Lorraine married her high school sweetheart, Irwin Manning, on May 4, 1940, when she was 19. They had three children and over the years became grandparents to nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Lorraine loved gardening and would spend hours tending to her iris and roses. She always had her animal companions by her side, including many dogs and cats. Growing up she had ponies and horses and helped her mother with their beloved dairy cows. She also loved birds and enjoyed many years of watching her pet canaries in a lovely aviary that Irwin built for her.
Lorraine was known as Mrs. Manning to many customers at the historic Atascadero Market.
She made delicious sandwiches and a variety of deli salads. She and Irwin worked side by side as owners of the market since 1956. Irwin and Lorraine were married for 75 years until his passing in 2015. Lorraine had a love and devotion to her husband and family that was unmatched. Lorraine passed on Jan. 28, 2019. She will be remembered for her kindness and grace.
She is survived by her children: Lonnie (Frank) Rocha, Linda (Bill) Mello, and Stan (Sandi) Manning along with all of her grandchildren, and two nephews: Nick and Steven Miller.
Graveside Services will be held Friday, Feb. 8, at 2:30 p.m. at Atascadero Pine Mountain Cemetery. A celebration of life will follow the service at the Atascadero Masonic Lodge, 2607 Traffic Way.
