Head-on collision leaves four injured

Atascadero driver booked on DUI charges

SAN LUIS OBISPO – A car holding three people was hit head-on by an alleged drunk driver on Los Osos Valley Road, east of Sombrero Drive last Friday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Los Osos residents Erin Ann Clyburn, 34, Beau Clyburn, 40, and an unidentified person received moderate injuries after their 2015 Chevy was hit by Atascadero resident Martin Sanchez Jr., 35. Sanchez received minor injuries from the crash.

California Highway Patrol was first alerted of a possible drunk driver at about 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 10, when Sanchez was driving his 2014 Chevy on Los Osos Valley Road, near South Bay Boulevard.

According to the CHP, Sanchez accelerated to speeds of more than 90 mph when an officer activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and pursued Sanchez’s vehicle and was weaving erratically, crossing into oncoming traffic.

Erin Clyburn was driving a 2015 Chevy in the opposite direction on Los Osos Valley Road and pulled over to the shoulder and began slowing after observing the police emergency lights. Sanchez’s vehicle suddenly veered to the left westbound lane and onto the shoulder, striking Clyburn’s vehicle head-on.

Sanchez was arrested on a number of charges, including suspicion of felony driving under the influence of drugs causing injury with disregard for the safety of others, and driving with a suspended license.
