Hounds beat Eagles, lose to Tigers

ATASCADERO — After defeating Pioneer Valley on Wednesday night in Santa Maria, the Greyhounds played host to the Arroyo Grande Eagles on Friday night. The Eagles are currently 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the PAC 8. AG also holds fourth in PAC 8 behind San Luis Obispo, St. Joseph, and Mission Prep, and the Hounds are in fifth place at 3-5, tied with Pioneer Valley and Paso Robles.

The game against the Eagles signifies the halfway point of the PAC 8 league season. The Hounds have now played every team once in league and will play each team again. So far Atascadero is among the top defensive teams in the PAC 8 and is in the top five in points allowed, however, the Hounds are in the bottom three in scoring.

Defense is what led the Hounds on Friday night. Atascadero held Arroyo Grande to only three points in the opening quarter, but the Eagles came roaring back in the second quarter sending the game to the half tied at 21 points.

Senior Kyler Warren led the Hounds offensively and on the glass. Warren scored 20 points on 50 percent shooting (7-14) and recorded 13 rebounds and five assists. The Hounds asserted their dominance via their big men, Cade VanAllen added an extremely efficient 14 points on 87 percent shooting (7-8) and also brought in five rebounds. Preston Hallett added eight points and kept the ball moving finishing with four assists.

The Hounds saved their two best offensive quarter for the second half scoring 17 and 15 respectively and won the game 53-42.

On Tuesday, the Hounds hosted the PAC 8 league leaders in the San Luis Obispo Tigers. Offensively the Hounds could not get their big men going and just couldn't match the firepower of the Eagles. Ayden Bremer led Atascadero with 14 points, Warren and Hallett both finished with 13.
