ATASCADERO- The boys water polo team opened the 2017 fall sports season with a game against Morro Bay High School on Tuesday afternoon. The small metal stands that hold the spectators were filled with disheveled, chlorine-bleached hairdos, and the aroma of sunscreen was inescapable. Their was a palpable buzz of excitement in the atmosphere for the return of school, and the return of sports.
The Hounds dominated the Pirates in every facet of the game jumping out to a (7-0) lead at the end of the first period. Head Coach Jon Conrad and the Greyhounds kept the pedal to the metal until the start of the third period, scoring eight more goals in the second period bringing the score to (15-1) at the halfway point. After the boys established their position as the stronger team in the pool, they began showing that signature central coast class and began dialing back the offense. After scoring 15 goals in the first two periods, the Hounds only tallied two additional goals in the second half of the game.
“Everybody got to play good minutes. Im very excited with how they played, we played up to our level, we didn't hold back,” Conrad said, “and the guys played like a team.”
The Greyhounds water polo team has a mixture of youth and experience this season, and operated efficiently on Tuesday.
“Everybody was doing their job on defense and we were executing on offense, we were making a lot of extra passes on offense and it led to some really nice looking goals.”
Conrad said. The Hounds played with an uncanny poise for such a young team, never once did they seem to panic on defense, even when being a man down.
“We have four seniors which have been on varsity for two years, and then we have a couple juniors so it's a pretty young team across the board even my seniors are relatively young in age being 16 and 17.”said Coach Conrad on the teams youth.
“We’ve got four strong leaders and i'm excited with where we are going.” he added. The Greyhounds next home match-up will be September 12 when they open up league play against the Righetti Warriors.
