Jan (Jeanette) Kniely of Sacramento, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2019, at the age of 88. She was born in Sullivan, Indiana on May 15, 1931, to Edward and Hester (Burdge) Monk. At the age of 18, Jan moved to Beverly Hills to care for the children of family friends. During those years, the Indiana girl enjoyed engaging and socializing with many celebrities. Then she met and fell in love with a Navy pilot, Joe Kniely, and three short months later they began their 61-year marriage.
Although their military life required some separation with carrier duties and the Viet Nam war, Jan and Joe, along with their two daughters, embraced adventures as they made homes around the country, including the Aleutian chain of islands in Alaska. Jan was happiest as a homemaker, taking care of her family. She loved life and was always ready to throw a party for friends and neighbors. She enjoyed sewing, learned mosaic tiling, created beautiful stained glass art and displayed a strong green thumb as she maintained vegetable gardens and beautiful yards. Jan had a smile that lit a room, a ready laugh and loving arms for her family. Named “Minnie” and “Mimi” by her grandchildren, caring for and loving them was one of her greatest joys.
Jan is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Kniely, and her daughter, Meg Westlund. She is survived by her daughter Sue (Jim) Douglass, grandsons Gregg (Jenni) Douglass, Joe Westlund and granddaughter Bonnie (Jason) Perry, along with four great-grandchildren.
