UPDATE: Atascadero police have identified the suspect involved in a foot pursuit after shoplifting from the Smart & Final on El Camino Real Thursday as 29-year-old Dustin Anthony Orton, of Paso Robles.
Following the chase, Orton was located in a nearby backyard and refused to comply with the police. K-9 officer Pit and his handler officer Chris Hester successfully brought Orton into custody.
Orton was booked into county jail at 9:46 p.m. Orton already had a felony no-bail warrant for his arrest. Orton was charged with shoplifting, obstruction and resisting a public officer, and two counts of probation violation. His bond was set at $2,000.
ATASCADERO — A suspect was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after a brief foot pursuit along Curbaril Avenue.
According to a statement issued by the Atascadero Police Department, officers responded to a report of a shoplifter at the Smart & Final store at Curbaril Avenue and El Camino Real.
As police arrived at the scene the suspect fled on foot and police established a perimeter in the area of Curbaril, Sinaloa and Santa Ysabel Avenues.
During the pursuit, the suspect was reported to be armed with a knife. Police requested backup from an APD K-9 unit and a California Highway Patrol helicopter.
The suspect was eventually located in a backyard on the 8900 block of Curbaril Avenue and taken into custody through a successful K-9 deployment after refusing to cooperate with police.
The suspect was treated for injuries at the scene.
Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect.
