Richard’s family came to the Paso Robles area in 1885. His grandchildren are the fifth generation of Sauret’s to live in Paso Robles. Richard’s family planted almonds and Zinfandel wine grapes. In the 1970’s Richard removed the almonds and planted zinfandel wine grapes.
Richard lived his life his own way. He loved his vineyards and spent most of his time in those vineyards. He was always a student of wine grape viticulture practices and always enjoyed teaching others what he had learned. With ever changing environmental conditions, differing soil types and different needs of the wide variety of wine grapes created new learning opportunities each year. Those challenges were a part of his life that Richard really enjoyed. That knowledge base from his life experiences led him to be respected by other professionals in the wine grape industry and he was always eager to share that knowledge, especially with the younger generations coming into the wine grape industry.
Richard is survived by sons, Ken (Sherry) Sauret, Curtis (Shirley) Sauret, Murray (Linda) Sauret. Brother, Gene Sauret, sisters, Judy (Red) Williams and Yvonne Williams and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The Independent Grape Growers Paso Robles Area will be organizing a Memorial for Richard Sauret after grape harvest is complete. This will likely be the first week of November. Contact IGGPRA for more information.
