A Santa Maria man was arrested Sunday morning after attempting to rob an Atascadero Shell Station while driving a stolen vehicle with kidnapping victims in tow.
The Atascadero Police Department received a call at approximately 9:50 a.m. informing them that the Shell Station located at 9155 San Gabriel Road had just been robbed at gunpoint. They received additional information that the suspect involved in the robbery was driving a vehicle that had been stolen at gunpoint in Santa Maria earlier that morning. The carjacking victim reported that the suspect held him at gunpoint and he and his juvenile son were forced to drive northbound on Highway 101.
The two victims escaped when the suspect stopped to rob the gas station and called police as the suspect fled in their vehicle. The suspect was located by San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Deputies a short time later and was arrested after a pursuit that ended in a traffic collision in San Miguel.
Santa Maria resident Baltazar Alverez Mendoza, 26, was arrested at the scene and charged with robbery and kidnapping. The suspect was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail and further charges are pending.
