ATASCADERO — Atascadero teacher Chris Berdoll was charged Friday, Sept. 21, with 44 separate felony counts related to the production and possession of child pornography, involving 20 separate victims, the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office reported.
The investigation is ongoing and the public is encouraged to contact Atascadero Police Department with any additional information.
On Friday, Sept. 21, District Attorney Dan Dow announced that Berdoll, 49, of Atascadero, is now charged with 44 felony counts related to child pornography. Twenty-four counts allege that Berdoll used children under the age of 18 to pose or model alone and with others for purpose of preparing photographs to depict child pornography. Twenty additional counts allege that Berdoll was in possession of child pornography.
This case was initially referred to the District Attorney’s Office on Thursday, Sept. 13. During the course of the ongoing investigation, several additional victims were identified leaving the total number of known victims at this time to be 20 children.
Given the sensitive nature of this ongoing investigation, no further information is available about the victims.
“While the Atascadero Police Department and the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations continue to investigate the case, we encourage any persons with information that may lead to additional victims or witnesses to contact the Atascadero Police Department,” the DA’s Office stated.
On Monday, Sept. 10, Berdoll, a longtime teacher at the Atascadero Fine Arts Academy, was arrested by APD on suspicion of possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct, sexual exploitation of a child, and using a minor for commercial sex acts.
Berdoll’s case is scheduled for arraignment at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, in Department 3 of the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court. At the arraignment, the District Attorney’s Office will seek a criminal protective order to prohibit Berdoll from having any contact with any of the victims in this case.
