ATASCADERO — On Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Atascadero Fire Department was dispatch to a report of smoke from the top floor of the four-story, SpringHill Suites, owned by Daon Properties and located at 900 El Camino Real in Atascadero.
According to dispatch traffic, at approximately 8:45 p.m. Atascadero FD responded along with Paso Robles Fire Department, Cal Fire, Atascadero Police Department and San Luis Ambulance. A total of five engines and one ladder truck was sent to the site. An Incident command post was established at the corner of El Camino Real and the Home Depot entrance.
Shortly after arriving, some of the engines were canceled. Firefighters made their way to the fourth floor and found smoke in the center hallway and in one room. In that room, they found a curling iron that had been left on and resting on a plastic brush that had melted and damaged the countertop, which caused all of the smoke according to officials.
Approximately 128 hotel guests were evacuated until the cause could be determined, but once the smoke was removed from the floor they were allowed back into their rooms within 30 minutes.
Additional units were released and AFD remained on scene for a short time to secure the area. A total of 16 firefighters and three police officers were involved in the incident.
No one was injured and property damages were minor and mostly smoke related and estimated at $1,000. Estimated property value saved by the firefighters was $10 million.
