ATASCADERO — The third annual family-friendly Taco Day on Traffic Way is happening Saturday from 1-4 p.m., on the sidewalk between the streets of El Camino Real and Lewis Avenue.

For $15, taco tasters may try six gourmet tacos from local chefs and can also cast their votes for their favorite tacos. Attendees can also try their luck at the prize wheel to win gift certificates for local businesses.

Live music will be performed by Mike Campbell and Richard Green, near El Camino and a jazz combo at the El Paseo Plaza.

The Carlton Hotel works with Visit Atascadero and the City of Atascadero to put on the event.

“It’s really, really fun,” Carlton Hotel Manager Deana Alexander said. “It’s definitely grassroots. We started it – a few people got their heads together– and we didn’t know what to expect the first year and here we are at number three.”

This year’s taco samplers are: Taqueria Don Jose, Shav ‘N Flav, the Micro BBQ Co., Socrates, Dark Nectar Roasting and Byblos Mediterranean Grill. The people’s choice winner will receive a $500 prize.

Last year, the “Taco Vato” Steven Rodriguez Sullivan of Shav ‘N Flav catering won the People’s Choice award the last two years.

“It’s fun. I love what I do, man,” Rodriguez Sullivan said. “We’re going to officially roll out one of our new menu items, called ‘Ques-acos.’ I wanted a Quesadilla and a taco at the same time, you know. And that’s how Ques-acos was born.”

Rodriguez Sullivan said in addition to his new signature corn double-taco Ques-aco, he will present a secret surprise taco for the competition.

This year non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase for Taco Day. Attendees looking for a bar are encouraged to stop by Dead Oak Brewing Company, Street Side Ale House or Grape Encounters for a beer or glass of wine to go with their tacos.

Tickets will be on sale the day of the event at the Carlton Hotel, 6005 El Camino Real in Atascadero.
