Too much offense for Atascadero

Greyhounds go winless in SLO Holiday Classic Tournament

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Greyhound girls basketball team played in the San Luis Obispo Holiday Classic Tournament this past weekend and went winless in their three games. The Greyhounds have yet to win a game in this short season, but have a very young team and are still learning how to play together.

Atascadero played their first game on Thursday night against Nipomo High School and fell 67-43. In their second game, the Hounds faced Independence, an experienced team led by their senior captain Kahaijah Dean who outscored the entire Greyhound team by herself when she put up a monster stat line of 39 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals to go with 0 turnovers and and going 6-for-14 from three-point territory.

The Hounds offense struggled in the second quarter. They were only able to score three points in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 52-11. Independence pulled away in the second half and won the game 79-30.

The Hounds have suffered some tough losses this season, losing by two points twice, and on Saturday they played another close game against Clovis East but were unable to make the necessary plays down the stretch to get the victory.

Defensively the Hounds had two fantastic quarters and two bad quarters. In the second and fourth quarter, Atascadero held Clovis East to only eight points in each, but gave up a combined 40 points in the other two quarters. Taylor Degnan and Olivia Sprouse led the way in scoring with both girls scoring 12 points.

Atascadero will not be in action again until the end of the month when they head to Righetti for a tournament.
