Alcohol suspected as a factor in accident

ATASCADERO — A suspected drunk driver collided with and completely demolished the sign at the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant on West Front Street early Monday morning.

The Atascadero Police Department received multiple 911 calls at approximately 1:16 a.m. Monday reporting that a vehicle had collided with the sign in front of Jack-In-The-Box and was flipped over in the street. First responders arrived a short time later and found the vehicle flipped on its side with five occupants inside, three of them small children. Witnesses reported that the vehicle had exited Highway 101 at a high rate of speed before jumping the sidewalk and colliding with the sign.

All of the vehicle’s occupants were injured and were transported to local hospitals. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Alcohol was suspected to have played a role in the collision and based on the initial investigation, the children involved in the accident were placed into protective custody.

Police are asking anybody who may have witnessed the accident or the activity immediately following the accident to call the Atascadero Police Department Traffic Division at 805-470-3212.
