PASO ROBLES — This week marked the start of the 2017 West Palms Winter Classic horse show, featuring various hunter jumper courses, derbies and classes at the Paso Robles Horse Park, 3801 Hughes Parkway.
The two-week-long event kicked off March 8 and continues through March 12 with the first-ever Central California Welcome Classic, followed by the Central California Zinfandel Classic from March 15 through 19. Each classic will finish with two weekend Grand Prix performances.
“This is the first time the event has been held here in the winter,” West Palms Marketing and Event Manager Daniella Ballard said. “Normally it’s spread out during four weeks of the year — the last week of May and first week of June and then the first two weeks of November.”
While some events are restricted only to qualifying competitors, these two events are essentially open to anyone, Ballard said. All competitors need to do is fill out an entry form and pay their fees.
With so many different divisions available to ride in, it comes as no surprise that this year’s events received several hundred entries, Ballard said. Divisions include hunter, equitation and jumper and are generally split into children (18 and under), amateur and professional levels.
While VIP seating is available for spectators, all events are free and open to the public. Seating will be made available under tents as well as on bleachers. Vendors, food and refreshment stands will also be scattered throughout the horse park grounds.
“These are typically a fun few weeks,” Ballard said. “Lots of people, whether they ride hunter jumpers or not, come to watch and have a good time.”
