SHANDON — A woman died in a single-vehicle crash near the rest stop east of Shandon Tuesday, Nov. 20, night, the California Highway Patrol office reported.
The woman died at the scene after being ejected from the 2002 Toyota Sequoia she was riding in rolled over several times, CHP reported. The woman’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
The driver of the Sequoia, Hugo Sanchez Carillo, 28, of Gonzales, sustained major injuries and was airlifted by a CHP helicopter to the trauma center at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, CHP reported.
Six other unidentified passengers in the Sequoia received minor to moderate injuries and were transported by ground ambulance to Twin Cities Community Hospital.
At approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Carillo was driving his Sequoia west on State Route 46 East just west of Lucy Brown Road at approximately 65 mph. He made an unsafe turning movement veering from an otherwise straight path of travel, CHP reported. The vehicle crossed over the median and rolled over multiple times landing on its wheels and was blocking the eastbound lanes of traffic, CHP reported.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, CHP reported.
