APF Tournament tees up big support for Atascadero youth programs

Golfers, sponsors, and volunteers rally behind public safety initiatives and scholarships

ATASCADERO — The 15th Annual Atascadero Police Foundation (APF) Charity Golf Tournament & Silent Auction brought together community members, local businesses, and public safety supporters for a day that was about far more than golf. Held Saturday, April 18, the event marked another successful chapter in a long-running tradition of giving back.

"The tournament went really well. We had 104 golfers, a great response," said APF Board President and retired Atascadero Police Corporal Scott Pipan. "The weather cooperated this year, which was great after dealing with rainy weather last year."

While sunny skies set the stage, it was the sense of community that defined the day. Golfers took to the course in support of the APF’s mission, while others participated in the silent auction and enjoyed the lively, welcoming atmosphere. After the tournament wrapped up, attendees gathered for food and music.

"We had food trucks from Palo Mesa Pizza and Yabba Dabba Dogs to feed our golfers and spectators, so thanks to them," Pipan said.

The celebration continued with a live performance from Leslie and the Soul Shakers, a band that has become a familiar and much-anticipated part of APF events.

"After the golf, we had a concert from the band Leslie and the Soul Shakers," Pipan said. "The lead singer is a relative of the owner of Cal Coast Construction, who is involved with the foundation, so she is always willing to come perform at our events."

Although final fundraising totals are still being calculated, early estimates suggest the event raised approximately $50,000.

"We need to figure out at our next APF meeting how much we raised, but I figure we made about $50,000," Pipan added.

The funds generated will directly support the APF’s ongoing initiatives, which focus heavily on youth programs and community engagement. These include providing safety equipment, awarding scholarships, hosting birthday celebrations for children at ECHO (El Camino Homeless Organization), and supporting programs like Guardians of Honor and the Atascadero Police Department K9 unit.

The tournament itself has a long history in Atascadero. Previously hosted by the Atascadero Police Association (APA), this is the second year the Atascadero Police Foundation (APF) has taken the lead in organizing the event. As an independent nonprofit made up of community members, business leaders, and Atascadero Police Department employees, the APF serves as a bridge between law enforcement and the public — working to strengthen relationships and enhance public safety through volunteer-driven efforts.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day came during the recognition of the 2026 APF Scholarship recipients. The scholarships are awarded through the Luca Benedetti Memorial Scholarship Program, which honors the life and service of Detective Luca Benedetti. Benedetti served as an Atascadero police officer for four years before joining the San Luis Obispo Police Department, where he became a detective. He was tragically killed in the line of duty on May 10, 2021, while serving a search warrant.

This year’s recipients — Scarlette Fonseca, Audryana Mosqueda, and Luke Davis — were introduced during the event.

"One of the best moments was getting to introduce our three scholarship winners," organizers shared on social media. "Hearing their stories and seeing their excitement to be future leaders in public service was a powerful reminder of why this all matters."

Beyond the fundraising totals and tournament scores, the event highlighted the strength and generosity of the Atascadero community. Support came in many forms — from golfers and sponsors to volunteers and attendees who simply showed up to be part of the day.

"Our 15th Annual APF Charity Golf Tournament & Silent Auction was something really special," organizers said. "It wasn’t just about golf or bidding; it was about people showing up for each other and for this community."

Looking ahead, the APF plans to continue building on that momentum, with future initiatives already in the works, including a public safety appreciation event this fall.

“To everyone who played, donated, volunteered, sponsored, or simply showed up, thank you,” organizers added. “This community always comes through, and we’re so proud to be part of it.”
