Atascadero Cemetery announces updated flower policy and gravesite clean-up
By Atascadero News · Mon Nov 24 2025
ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Cemetery District has updated its flower policy and will begin a scheduled gravesite clean-up on Monday, Jan. 6, 2026. Signs will be posted at the cemetery, and the district is notifying the community so families are aware of the process.
The policy update and clean-up are necessary due to the excessive number of items being left on and around many gravesites. Families are encouraged to remove items and arrange flowers in accordance with the current policy before the clean-up date.
Key points of the updated Flower Policy include:
- Only flowers may be placed at gravesites in cemetery-provided vases. Small American and/or military flags are allowed only near Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.
- Flowers (fresh, plastic, or silk) must go in installed vases on headstones; if no vase exists, flowers may be placed directly on the headstone. New burials (up to six months) may have flowers placed directly on the grave in the headstone area.
- Funeral floral pieces may remain temporarily after new burials but must be removed from vases. Funeral plants are not allowed.
- All items on or around headstones that do not conform to policy will be removed. Large or valuable items will be set aside for family pick-up, while small or inexpensive items may be discarded. Cemetery staff and volunteers are not responsible for any loss or breakage.
The district emphasizes that adherence to this policy ensures the cemetery remains safe, clean, and peaceful for visitors, while protecting cemetery staff, animals, and equipment.
