Atascadero Police Department to conduct DUI checkpoint Aug. 14

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint Friday, Aug. 14, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

According to the department, checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired-driving-related crashes. The primary purpose is to promote traffic safety and remove suspected impaired drivers from the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Commander Matt Chesson said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Police reminded drivers that impairment can result from alcohol, prescription medications and some over-the-counter drugs. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

The department said a first-time DUI can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
