Burglary suspect arrested in multi-county commercial crime series

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a series of commercial burglaries spanning multiple North County communities, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit arrested Ryan Michael Coats on June 10, on four felony burglary charges and one count of attempted burglary following an investigation into crimes reported since April.

Investigators said the burglaries occurred at several businesses across Cambria, Cayucos, San Simeon, Templeton, and San Luis Obispo, including the San Simeon Post Office, Artifacts Gallery, McLean Jewelry, and Upscale Resale.

Authorities reported that search warrants were served in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, where evidence was recovered linking the suspect to multiple incidents. At the time of his arrest, Coats was allegedly found in possession of stolen property tied to a burglary that occurred earlier the same day in San Luis Obispo.

Detectives also believe Coats may be connected to additional burglaries outside of San Luis Obispo County. Officials noted he was out on bail for a separate burglary case being investigated by Morro Bay Police at the time of his arrest.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Coats has prior felony convictions in Santa Barbara County, including possession of a stolen vehicle (2019), assault with a deadly weapon (2020), and grand theft (2022).
