Grading activity continues at Paul’s Slide with no change in estimated reopening of Highway 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Crews in Monterey and San Luis Obispo County are actively engaged in repairing Highway 1 at Paul’s Slide on the Big Sur coast. The estimated full reopening of the highway is anticipated in late spring 2024.

Current Progress:

• Repair efforts are focused on grading the site and delivering fill material to the south end to support the new road alignment.
• Elevation of the south end is a priority, and further progress will lead to surveys determining the exact path of the elevated road, located about 60 feet inland from its previous course.

Infrastructure Development:

• Final design of drainage infrastructure is complete, with crews fabricating elements for five new independent culvert systems.
• Future work includes the installation of protective rockfall barriers on the northbound side, drainage infrastructure, and southbound guardrail.

Weather Impact:

• Recent rains have caused intermittent production delays. Crews prepare for forecasted rain and adapt to saturated ground conditions post-rain.

Work Schedule:

• Crews maintain a seven-day workweek to meet project deadlines.

Current Travel Status:

• Highway 1 is open for travel from Monterey/Carmel to 0.6 miles south of Lucia, and from Cambria/San Simeon north to Limekiln State Park.
• No vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian traffic is allowed across the Paul’s Slide repair site due to construction activities and the risk of slides and rockfall.
