Long Valley named Atascadero’s Second Firewise USA® Community

ATASCADERO — The Long Valley neighborhood has officially been recognized as a NFPA Firewise USA Community, becoming the second neighborhood in Atascadero to earn the designation in the past eight months, according to Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services.
Spanning 1,262 acres and home to 221 residences and more than 500 residents, Long Valley undertook a months-long effort to reduce wildfire risk. Neighbors formed a local Firewise board, completed a comprehensive wildfire risk assessment and developed a three-year action plan aimed at hazard reduction and improving defensible space.
The community submitted its application Jan. 28 to the National Fire Protection Association and received its Certificate of Recognition within weeks.
“This accomplishment reflects the power of neighbors working together to protect lives, property, and the environment,” said Dave Van Son, Battalion Chief. “Long Valley’s commitment sets an inspiring example for other neighborhoods in our city.”
Participation in the Firewise USA program offers benefits including improved preparedness through risk assessments and mitigation planning, expanded access to fire agency resources, potential eligibility for grants supporting fuel reduction projects and, in some cases, insurance considerations tied to wildfire risk reduction.
