Sheriff’s Office reports Fourth of July fireworks enforcement results

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office reported the results of its Fourth of July enforcement efforts targeting illegal fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county.

During the holiday weekend, the Sheriff’s Office deployed additional personnel and took a zero-tolerance approach toward violations of the county’s fireworks ordinance. On July 4 alone, dispatch received more than 1,100 calls for service, including 285 reports related to illegal fireworks.

As part of the enforcement effort, deputies issued 21 county fireworks violation notices, submitted five criminal fireworks cases to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office, and identified 11 additional locations through drone operations that will receive violation notices by mail. Additional violations may be identified as drone footage continues to be reviewed.

Illegal fireworks violations can result in fines of up to $1,000. The Sheriff’s Office utilized multiple resources during the operation, including deputies, the Compliance Unit, Unmanned Aerial Systems Drone Team, Off-Highway Vehicle Team, Aero Squadron, and CAL FIRE personnel.

Officials said illegal fireworks violations were lower than during the 2025 Fourth of July holiday, crediting increased enforcement, the county ordinance, and residents who chose to celebrate with professional fireworks displays.
