Susan Funk announces bid for Atascadero City Council re-election

ATASCADERO — Atascadero City Councilmember Susan Funk has announced she will seek re-election in the Nov. 3, General Election, launching her campaign for a third term on the City Council.

First elected in 2018, Funk said she is running to continue the city's progress in revitalizing downtown, improving public safety and investing in infrastructure.

“When I first stepped up to be a fresh voice on the Council in 2018, people were frustrated by all the things Atascadero lacked: restaurants, shopping, and things for young people to do,” said Funk. “Now downtown is beginning to thrive, restaurants and small businesses are opening up, and Atascadero is becoming the place to be. I’m running for re-election because I want to keep Atascadero moving forward. Let’s make sure Atascadero remains a great place to live, work, raise a family, build a business, and enjoy your grandchildren.”

According to a press release from Funk announcing her campaign, during her tenure, the city has added police officers, replaced aging fire engines and begun construction on a $37 million public safety facilities project, including a new downtown fire station and emergency operations center.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, but there is key work yet to be done,” Funk said. “I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Atascadero and working every day to keep our city moving forward.”

Funk said campaign finance reports to be released later this month will show her campaign has raised more funds at this stage than in either of her previous successful council races, with much of the support coming from individual donations of $100 or less.

In addition to serving on the City Council, Funk serves on the Atascadero Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency and the countywide Homeless Services Oversight Council, which she chaired for three years. She said she helped develop the county's 2022 Strategic Plan on Homelessness, which she credits with contributing to a 42% reduction in unsheltered homelessness countywide.

The Atascadero City Council election will be held Nov. 3.
