Welcome to the Gearhead Corner!

Keep Rollin’ Through Central Coast Winter

Winter on California’s Central Coast may not bring the drama of the Rockies, but we do get those brisk mornings, foggy commutes, and chilly road trips up Highway 1. And nothing reminds you faster than your tires that winter is here — yep, we’re talking about that little glowing tire pressure light that pops on just when you’re trying to enjoy your coffee.

At Shift’N Gears Auto Repair, we’re all about keeping your ride smooth, safe, and adventure-ready. So let’s talk winter tires, local style.

Why Central Coast Winters Steal Your Tire Pressure

When temps drop — especially overnight — the air inside your tires shrinks. You lose about 1–2 PSI with every 10°F drop, which is why your dashboard decides to tattletale at 6 a.m. even if your tires were fine yesterday afternoon in Paso, Atascadero, or SLO.

It’s not dramatic — just physics being annoying.

What To Do When Your Tire Pressure Light Comes On (That Horse Shoe Thingy)

Step 1: Don’t panic.

Your tire isn’t auditioning for a blowout scene. (hopefully)

Step 2: Give your tires a quick glance.

If nothing looks flat, punctured or sad, it’s likely just low PSI from the cold.

Step 3: Add air.

Stop by a gas station, use your home compressor, or swing by Shift’N Gears Auto Repair. Aim for the PSI  listed on your driver’s door jamb (not the “guess-a-number” pressure on the sidewall).

Step 4: Light still staring you down?

You might have a slow leak or a cranky TPMS sensor. No shame — bring it in and let the pros handle it.

DIY Tire Love for Central Coast Drivers

Check weekly. Foggy mornings + chilly temps = PSI drop.

Do the penny test. If Abe Lincoln’s entire head is visible, treat your car to new tires.

Rotate every oil change. Vineyard roads, and coastal curves wear tires unevenly.

Headed to Tahoe, Shaver or Mammoth? Keep chains in your trunk — rangers don’t play around.
