Atascadero Fire responds to two major incidents, multiple calls on May 6

ATASCADERO — Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services (AFES) responded to a high volume of emergency calls on May 6, including two significant fire incidents that required multi-agency coordination and sustained firefighting efforts.

The first incident was reported at approximately 11:55 a.m. as a structure fire in the 8300 block of Los Osos Road. Crews arrived to find fire affecting about 25% of the home and immediately began an aggressive attack while conducting a search of the structure. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent further spread, bringing the fire under control by 12:26 p.m.

Additional assistance was provided by Atascadero Police, San Luis Ambulance, County Fire, Santa Margarita Fire, Paso Robles Fire, Templeton Fire, and Atascadero State Hospital. Officials determined the cause of the fire was improperly discarded rags used for staining wood.

While crews were still engaged at the structure fire, a second incident was reported at approximately 1:11 p.m. near the area of Chauplin Drive and Aguila Street. The call, initially reported as a smoke check, was upgraded to a vegetation fire response. Firefighters arrived to find a one-acre vegetation fire with a slow rate of spread near multiple homes.

Resources from the first incident were redirected to assist, along with additional engines from neighboring agencies. Crews quickly stopped the fire’s forward progress and remained on scene for approximately two hours for full extinguishment, fire line construction, and investigation. Officials said the fire was caused by multiple unauthorized incendiary rodent extermination devices, also known as burrow fumigants.

During these simultaneous incidents, additional AFES units also responded to six other emergency calls within the city. Officials credited the successful response to coordinated efforts among regional fire and public safety agencies.

No injuries were reported to civilians or emergency personnel.
