City reminds residents of new fireworks ordinance ahead of Fourth of July

ATASCADERO — As Independence Day approaches, the City of Atascadero is reminding residents that a new ordinance is now in effect aimed at reducing the use of illegal fireworks and holding property owners and tenants accountable for violations.

The ordinance establishes a Social Host Accountability Program, allowing the city to recover emergency response costs and impose administrative penalties when illegal fireworks are used on property under a person's possession or control.

City officials said the measure is intended to address the fire danger, injuries, property damage, and neighborhood disruptions often associated with illegal fireworks.

"Most residents want to celebrate responsibly and safely," said Police Chief Dan Suttles. "This ordinance is focused on those situations where illegal fireworks create risks for neighbors, first responders, and the community as a whole. Our goal is education first, compliance second, and enforcement when necessary."

Under the ordinance, property owners, tenants, and individuals who host gatherings where illegal fireworks are used may be held financially responsible for fines and emergency response costs, even if they did not personally ignite the fireworks.

Residents are encouraged to celebrate safely and avoid purchasing, possessing, or using illegal fireworks. Illegal fireworks activity can be reported to Atascadero Police Dispatch through the non-emergency line at (805) 461-5051. Emergencies involving fires, injuries, or immediate threats should be reported by calling 911.
