How Skinner is redefining style, community, and connection in downtown Atascadero
ATASCADERO — On one of the most prominent corners in downtown Atascadero, a fresh energy is taking shape — one defined not just by design, but by vision in every sense of the word.
For Kyla Skinner, owner of Specs by Kyla, the move into a new, more expansive space marks both a milestone and the culmination of five years of steady, intentional growth. What began as a modest, word-of-mouth business has evolved into one of the city’s most distinctive retail experiences, rooted in authenticity, creativity, and community connection. Skinner said the decision to relocate was driven by necessity as much as opportunity.
“We were definitely outgrowing our previous space,” Skinner said. “It felt like an eyewear party at times — fun, but crowded.”
That growth did not happen overnight. Built almost entirely through personal referrals, Specs by Kyla has developed a loyal customer base that values not just the product, but the experience behind it. Clients often leave with more than eyewear — they leave with a sense of individuality that becomes part of their identity.
“When someone is wearing really unique eyewear, they get compliments everywhere they go,” Skinner said. “They’re excited to tell people where they got their glasses.”
That kind of organic promotion has helped propel the business forward, allowing Skinner to expand thoughtfully while maintaining the core values that define her brand. Rather than rushing growth, she focused on reinvesting in the business, building a stable foundation that could support long-term success. Now, in the new location at 5915 El Camino Real, that vision has come to life.
The shop itself reflects Skinner’s creative evolution. What was once a stark office space has been transformed into a light-filled, welcoming retail environment that blends historic character with modern design.
“It was a slow build,” Skinner said. “We didn’t know what was behind the walls at first.”
As renovations progressed, layers of drywall revealed unexpected details — exposed brick, vintage wallpaper, and architectural elements that had been hidden for decades. By removing drop ceilings and fluorescent lighting, the space opened into something more expansive and inviting, creating an atmosphere that feels both elevated and approachable.
The design is intentionally understated, allowing the eyewear itself to take center stage. Neutral tones serve as a backdrop for bold, artistic frames that reflect both current trends and Skinner’s evolving aesthetic.
“I started more conservative,” Skinner said. “But the funky pieces flew off the shelves. That told me everything.”
Skinner’s ability to anticipate and respond to her clients’ preferences has been key to her success. Regular trips to European trade shows, particularly in Paris, have helped her stay ahead of trends while curating a collection that feels both global and accessible.
“I couldn’t bring everything back at once,” Skinner said. “But I made a list of what inspired me and slowly built from there.”
While the inspiration may be international, the experience remains deeply local. Skinner emphasizes personal connection in every interaction, from fittings to follow-up care, creating a level of service that has become a hallmark of the business. As her team has grown, maintaining that consistency has been a priority.
“The people I’ve hired understand that human connection,” Skinner said. “We meet people in the same way.”
That commitment extends to problem-solving as well. Skinner said she embraces the responsibility that comes with ownership, particularly when challenges arise.
“That’s the beauty of being a business owner,” she said. “I don’t have to ask someone else what to do. I can fix it.”
Beyond the storefront, Skinner remains deeply engaged in the Atascadero community. She participates in local events and supports organizations such as ECHO’s Empty Bowls and Family Care Network, aligning her business with causes that reflect her personal values. Adoption and foster care advocacy hold particular significance for Skinner, who was adopted herself — an experience that has helped shape who she is today and continues to influence both her philanthropic efforts and her connection to the community.
“It just feels good to give back in a small way,” Skinner said.
Skinner is also part of a collaborative network of local business owners who work together to strengthen downtown Atascadero. Through shared ideas, events, and mutual support, the group has contributed to what many describe as a revitalization of the area.
“It’s not cutthroat,” Skinner said. “We all understand that if we succeed together, we’re stronger.”
That sense of collaboration has helped transform downtown into a vibrant, walkable destination. Skinner recalled a recent evening that underscored the shift.
“There was a Friday night where nothing special was happening, but the streets were full,” she said. “That’s when it hit me — it’s working.”
As Specs by Kyla settles into its new space, Skinner said her focus is shifting toward sustainable growth and leadership, ensuring the business retains its identity even as it continues to expand.
“How do you keep that energy?” she said. “That’s something I think about a lot.”
For Skinner, the answer lies in staying true to the values that built the business — authenticity, connection, and trust.
“To know that I have a business people trust — that feels huge,” she said.
As downtown Atascadero continues to grow, businesses like Specs by Kyla are helping shape its future — one defined by creativity, collaboration, and a shared sense of place. And for Skinner, the path forward is clear.
