Alfred J. DeRose Jr. (1945-2026)

Alfred John DeRose, Jr, 81, passed from this life to be with our Lord on July 28, 2026, with his family at his side. Alfred was born April 12, 1945, in Hanford, CA.

There are people who leave footprints, and then there are those who leave a legacy. Our father was one of those rare individuals whose influence reached far beyond the classroom, the judging arena, or the show ring. A legendary agriculture educator, nationally recognized livestock and dairy judging coach, and mentor, he dedicated his life to inspiring excellence, integrity, and a love for agriculture and FFA. His countless state, national, and world championships stand as remarkable accomplishments, but his greatest success was the thousands of lives he touched along the way.

Known for his big smile with those unmistakable dimples and toothpick, genuine sincerity, unwavering work ethic, and passion for helping others succeed, he was respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether coaching a judging team, encouraging a student, or sharing his knowledge with fellow educators and friends, he led with confidence, kindness, and an infectious enthusiasm that inspired generations.

While agriculture was his life’s work, his greatest joy was his family. He treasured every opportunity to watch his grandchildren play nearly every sport and make memories together at fairs and livestock shows. He was their teacher, mentor, and greatest source of wisdom. He took immense pride in passing along not only his knowledge of agriculture and livestock, but also the values of hard work and dedication.

One of his greatest joys in life was the love he shared with his wife Jilinda, whose passing 12 years ago left a place in his heart that was never filled. Together they cherished traveling, watching their grandkids, and building a lifetime of memories. Though reunited now, their love remains an enduring example to their family.

His legacy will live on in every student he mentored, every judge he inspired, every handshake he offered, every lesson he taught, and in the family he loved so deeply. His smile, his wisdom, his passion for agriculture, sports, and people, and the countless lives he shaped will never be forgotten.

Alfred is survived by three daughters, Callie (Bill) Laporte of Salinas, Amy (Bobby) Pierce of Patterson, and Tamera (Michael) Hernandez DeRose of Atascadero; grandchildren, Alfred Landon, Makenzi, and Hayden Laporte; Frances, Claire, Jacob, and Caleb Pierce; Jazmyn, Paizley, and Olyvia DeRose and siblings, Anthony (Angie) DeRose, Steve (Diane) DeRose, and Kathy (Richard) Rose.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2026, at Chapel of the Roses, 3450 El Camino Real, Atascadero, CA. 93422.

A Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2026, at Chapel of the Roses.

Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at St. Williams Church, 6410 Santa Lucia Road, Atascadero, CA. 93422.

Burial to follow at Atascadero District Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Road, Atascadero, CA. 93422.
