Friends,

Earlier this week, Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) of New York State announced that he would be reopening the New York State economy on a region-by-region basis.

When asked why, Gov. Cuomo said:

“We’re going to make reopening decisions on a regional basis based on that region’s facts and circumstances…

“[The] North Country has a totally different situation than New York City. Central New York has a different situation. We operate as one state but we also have to understand variations, and you do want to get this economy open as soon as possible.”

The same can be said of California.

California, like New York, is a collection of diverse regions with regional variance in severity of COVID-19 outbreaks. San Luis Obispo County, for example, has a population size of nearly 300,000 and has less than 140 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 115 recovered. It has also built a 931-bed Alternative Care Site at Cal Poly to handle any potential surge or second wave.

California should be allowing regions that have flattened the curve and increase medical capacity to begin a science-based, phased reopening of the local economy with the guidance of local public health officials… just like they’re planning on doing in New York.
